CMS Pushing For State Legislation Change

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools leaders are pushing North Carolina’s Senate to revise a law that mandates smaller elementary school classes.

Leaders say the district will have to budget more than $20 million to buy classroom trailers and reassign hundreds of teachers if the change doesn’t happen soon.

The district pitched the idea today with Superintendent Clayton Wilcox also saying the district will have to make a plan fast before the local budget deadline. Wilcox says every school in the district will be affected in some way with the teacher shifts.

The mandate is designed to help children master reading by the third grade.
