“Controlled Access” Being Implemented At CMPD Headquarters Following Shooting

The Latest:

Following last night’s shooting, CMPD now says they will have “controlled access” to their headquarters.

The announcement was made in an email obtained by WCCB. It was sent out to all CMPD staff regarding security protocols that are being put in place and amended following the shooting Thursday night.

You can read the entire email below:

“CMPD Family,

As we continue to evaluate security measures related to access to CMPD Headquarters, we have determined that there is an immediate need to control access to the facility in order to enhance our ability to protect our most important asset, YOU. Effective, today, January 12, 2018, at 1700 hours we will be implementing controlled access to CMPD HQ. What this means is that the entryways to the main lobby (rotunda) will be now be locked at ALL times and will require key card access or clearance from one of the officers at the security desk.

Citizens, the general public, media and contractors will still have access to the facility but must be cleared for entry by the officers working the rotunda. Our goal is to continue to provide the best service we can while ensuring the safety of all who enter and/ or occupy our facility. Please don your I.D. badges, especially if you are in plainclothes, remain aware of your surroundings and do not hesitate to challenge anyone who is not in uniform or donning a recognizable badge. Also be aware of anyone in and around the CMPD parking deck and take measures to ensure that they are CMPD employees or other authorized users.”

Police have released the name of the officer shot in the leg after being ambushed by a suspected murder suspect.

CMPD says Officer Casey Shue was shot in the leg.  Shue was hired on July 21, 2014, and is assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit.

Officer Zederbaum was hired on January 12, 2009, and is assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit. Officer Decker was hired on July 21, 2014, and is also assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit.

As is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident. Per department protocol, the officers involved in this case are on Administrative Leave.

Officer Shue was recognized as officer of the month this past August for her outstanding work in keeping Hidden Valley neighborhood members safer. That work included removing six guns from the streets of the community while making twenty-one arrests. She also led officer initiated activities in the North Tryon Division this past summer.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Any further information will be released through CMPD Public Affairs. Questions about the the probation officers should be directed to Pamela Walker with the NC Department of Public Safety, Division of Community Corrections. That telephone number is 919-733-5027.

This is a video posted by CMPD on YouTube when Officer Shue received the Officer on the Month award.

The call came in around 10:45pm. Chief Putney says multiple officers were meeting in the parking area when Jonathan Bennett pulled in driving his white SUV, and ambushed the officers. Putney says multiple shots where fired by both Bennett and the officers in the area.

One female officer was shot in the leg and taken to CMC. The injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Bennett was transported with life threatening injuries and later pronounced dead.

Bennett was wanted in connection to a deadly shooting earlier this afternoon involving the mother of his 2-month-old baby girl. Bennett allegedly took off with the baby after the shooting, but she was later found unharmed.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles commented on the incident Friday morning, highlighting the issue of domestic violence at the heart of the case.
