SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) β Carlos Berlocq and Leonardo Mayer won singles matches Sunday, rallying Argentina past Israel 3-2 in a Davis Cup World Group playoff.
Berlocq captured the decisive match, downing Bar Botzer 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. The 20-year-old Bozer is ranked 776th and was making his Davis Cup debut this weekend.
Earlier at Sunrise Tennis Center, Mayer defeated Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in a match between the top players of each nation.
Israel led 2-1 after Saturday’s doubles in the best-of-five playoff. This was the third time Argentina has rallied to win a series in its 91-year Davis Cup history, the other times coming against Brazil in 1976 and Germany in 1990.
Argentina will now be among the 16 teams in the top tier of Davis Cup in 2015. It has been a Davis Cup runner-up four times, most recently in 2011.
Israel was relegated to the World Group II. Its best Davis Cup result was in 2009 when it advanced to the semifinals.
