CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have nullified the three-year, $24 million deal offered to free-agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland due to a failed physical caused by a non-football injury, according to the team.
The injury is reported to be a cut that Breeland suffered on his foot as a child and has dealt with throughout his career. Sources say the injury was aggravated during a vacation this off season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that injury is infected and may take additional time to heal. Breeland says he does not expect to miss time this season due to the injury.
“It’s never been an issue,” Breeland said of the cut. “I go to a new team, they’re not comfortable. I don’t understand it. I ain’t pointing no figures. At the end of the day, I’m to blame because I failed the physical.”
Breeland was expected to be an impact signing who could start opposite James Bradberry and upgrade Carolina’s secondary.
The Panthers will now return their attention to the free agent market as they look to solidify the defensive backfield.
