Officials Investigating Illegal Dumping Of Toxic Waste Into City Sewers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials are trying to determine who is responsible for illegally dumping toxic waste into the sewer system that impacted the Mallard Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.Β 

A problem was first detected Thursday afternoon.Β  The utility department immediately took the plant off-line and began capturing and containing the contaminated wastewater within the plant.Β 

Crews have determined the source of the contamination was illegally dumped behind a grocery store near the intersection of West Sugar Creek Road and Harris Boulevard.Β 

Based on their research, officials do not believe the public is at risk.Β  The toxic waste included trichlorobenzene and PCBs.Β 

Crews say they were able to contain the contamination within the plant.Β  As a precaution, officials are advising people to avoid being exposed to Mallard Creek and Rocky River until more testing is completed.Β
