NC lawmakers request emails, notes, travel logs and more from Mecklenburg Co. Sheriff Garry McFadden
MECKLENBURG CO., N.C. – North Carolina lawmakers want more records and information from Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden. The sheriff appeared before lawmakers in Raleigh earlier this week in House Oversight Committee hearing on Charlotte’s public safety. Things got heated during the conversation with state leaders. In a new letter sent to the sheriff on Wednesday, the committee co-chairs write in part, “Several of your responses relied on deflection or claims of legal constraint that frustrated the vast majority of this committee’s most important questions.”
Republican Reps. Jake Johnson, Brenden Jones and Harry Warren are now asking for any communication the sheriff had with ICE officials on several dates last March, including emails and notes. Plus, they want information on jail deaths and detention center employee training. They are also asking Sheriff McFadden for travel logs.
The Sheriff’s office says they will comply with the requests from the lawmakers. Right now, McFadden is also facing a state investigation over complaints from former Sheriff’s Office employees about his leadership and issues in the workplace.
