Man hit, killed by light rail in northeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A man died Sunday after being hit by a CATS light rail train in northeast Charlotte.

Around 5:45 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to the intersection of North Tryon Street and Orr Road in regards to a pedestrian being hit by a light rail train. When officers arrived, they found 32-year-old Carlos Michilena unresponsive near the tracks.

Michilena was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was declared dead Sunday morning.

According to police, Michilena was in the intersection and walked in front of a southbound light rail train. Michilena was thrown from the collision. All safety mechanisms for the CATS line were functioning properly, police said.
