Gaston County adopts 2027 budget

GASTON CO., NC – The Gaston County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt the budget for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2027 Tuesday night.

The adopted budget maintains the county property tax rate at 59.9 cents per $100 of assessed value. Property owners will continue to pay this rate in addition to either a municipal or unified fire district tax, depending on their location.

Other approved budget highlights include:

  • Large-scale projects, such as landfill expansion and upgrades at solid waste convenience sites, will primarily be funded through enterprise funds sustained by service fees rather than property tax dollars.
  • The county will add five new positions, three of which are fully funded through grants or restricted revenue rather than the general fund.
  • Capital funding recommendations focus primarily on repairs, maintenance, and equipment replacement, including replacement of the fire alarm system at the county jail and a building automation system at the county courthouse.

In addition to ongoing conversations regarding school funding, the Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution requesting the North Carolina General Assembly allow Gaston County to pursue a one-quarter cent sales tax dedicated directly to supporting Gaston County Schools’ operating budget.
