CHARLOTTE, NC – A grandmother found stabbed in her home, and 15 years later, police have made an arrest.

Gary Hames now faces charges of murder, armed robbery and felony breaking and entering for the death of Lottie Mae Webb.

Hames was the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s daughter.

“He came by my house after it was over with and told me he’s sorry to hear about what happened to my mother,” said Lena Moore, the victim’s daughter.

It was January 2000, the community was mourning when police say someone broke in through a kitchen window, robbed Webb and stabbed her multiple times. The same house where Moore had once took Hames as a date to meet her mother.

“I never thought he would go back by himself and try to hurt her or something,” said Moore.

Back then, police questioned Hames. Court documents show he’d already begun a criminal career, listing convictions such as breaking and entering, escape from prison, and assault on a woman.

Plus, he knew the victim. “But we didn’t have the ability to get the information we needed,” said Capt. Brisbon.

Police didn’t have the technology to test the blood detectives found in Webb’s house until now.

“We review cases periodically just to see if there is anything we may have missed the first time or need to do further work on, and we also look at cases where times have changed and technology is on our side,” said Capt. Brisbon.

Detectives matched Hames’ DNA to the old crime scene, and Tuesday, they found him in jail already. He’s been arrested in Mecklenburg county more than 46 times.

“I hope he gets what he deserves,” said Moore. “We will be in court. We will.”

This is the 40th cold case police have solved in the past seven years due to better technology and grant money. Right now, they are trying to get more grant money to solve more cases.
