Pedestrian hit, killed while changing tire on York County highway

A pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to change a tire in York County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

It happened Wednesday night around 10:35 p.m. on SC 161 near Rocky Creek Road in York, South Carolina.

Troopers said a pedestrian, later identified as 54-year-old Michael Kerns, was outside in the median on SC 161 attempting to change a tire on his vehicle. According to the highway patrol, a westbound Lexus sedan struck Kerns and the car.

Kerns died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Pathology and toxicology reports are pending. This collision is still under investigation by the highway patrol.
