ROCK HILL, S.C. — The U.S. Quidditch World Cup is set to return to Rock Hill this spring, featuring 80 collegiate and club teams from ac cross the country.
The growing city first hosted a regional quidditch tournament last year. This April, Rock Hill plans to host the U.S. Quidditch organization’s larger event, one that could attract up to 10,000 people.
Get ready for brooms, bludgers and snitches because organizers say they’ve planned for an “extravagant atmosphere,” highlighting competitive match-ups, live music, entertainment and kid’s activities. The event will also include a family-friendly costume contest.
The fictional game depicted in the Harry Potter book series began real-life play around 2005 and now exists on most college campuses. Last year, Rock Hill’s Winthrop University played in the Southern regional tournament hosted at Manchester Meadows.
Quidditch is played with seven players on each side, all of whom are on brooms. Each team tries to score by heaving a ball (quaffle) through a set up of three hoops on each end of the playing field. A keeper protects the hoops in this full-contact sport.
This year’s World Cup in Rock Hill will be hosted at Manchester Meadows. Advanced, discounted tickets are available online through eventbrite.com, with kids’ day passes starting at $7.99. Adult day passes start at $14.99 and prices will rise starting February 19th.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on April 11 and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 12.
