Report: NC worst state for workers for the seventh consecutive year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina labor leaders and union members gathered in Charlotte on Monday for the annual Labor Day Parade and Picnic. The celebration comes at a tense time for local labor, after a recent Oxfam report ranked North Carolina the worst state for workers for the seventh consecutive year.

Labor leaders met with local workers at The Pavilions at Park Road to launch a new statewide voter mobilization program. Organizers say their main goal for the upcoming midterm elections is keeping elected officials accountable to the working class.

Charlotte-Metrolina Labor Council president Chris Barrett says, “It is very important for the public to understand that a lot of these people are not always having a wonderful place to go home to. Labor Day’s a reflection of what they are and how far we’ve come and how far we have to go.”

Union leaders say they plan to start door-to-door canvassing this week to amplify workers’ voices ahead of the November election.
