Student Pictures Show Mold In Residence Hall After JCSU Delays Spring Semester Due To Issues

CHARLOTTE, NC — Johnson C. Smith University says it will delay the start of spring semester due to mold in some of the dorms.

The University posted the following message to its website:

Dear JCSU students,

In consultation with experts guiding our evaluation and remediation of suspected mold in some of our residence halls, Johnson C. Smith University has decided to delay the beginning of classes for the spring 2019 semester until Tuesday, Jan. 22, to allow us sufficient time to complete this work.

Although the evaluation took longer than expected, we have inspected every room and implemented an aggressive remediation and overall cleaning program to head off any potential issues in the future. As a result, with some limited exceptions as noted below, our residence halls will not reopen until Jan. 18 for the vast majority of students.

We want to reiterate that no student will be assigned to a room where mold has been identified and has not been remediated. If any work remains to be done upon students’ return, we will assist in relocating affected students to alternate housing. Students who have already arrived on campus for specific projects and programs will be accommodated in approved housing.

To sustain academic integrity and student matriculation, JCSU will also offer accommodations such as calendar changes, additional online classes and other support that might be necessary.

Nothing is more important to us than the health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff. We apologize for the inconvenience our delayed opening will cause but want to ensure our work is comprehensive and thorough. In addition to remediating any suspected mold growth, a focus of our work is deep cleaning and to address any existing water damage that can lead to such issues.

We appreciate your support and understanding and will do everything we can to accommodate extenuating circumstances of our students.

If you have any questions regarding your classes, please contact your Academic Dean. Please direct questions about housing to the office of Residence Life at ResidenceLife@jcsu.edu.

Sincerely,

Clarence D. Armbrister,
President

Jazlyn Lambert, a student at JCSU who lives in the New Residents Hall, sent WCCB the following pictures of mold found inside her building.

Lambert says she has contacted the university president about the issues. She says she has also experienced health issues as a result of the mold.

Classes for JCSU’s spring semester are now set to begin on Tuesday, January 22.
