Charlotte Man Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison For Carjacking And Gun Charges

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — U.S. District Judge Robert Conrad Jr. says 26-year-old Unique Bennett was sentenced to 12 years in prison for carjacking and gun charges on October 22nd.

Detectives say on November 7th, 2018 Bennett and his co-defendant Zachary Morris approached someone in an apartment complex on Lodge South Circle in Charlotte and pointed a firearm at the victim taking his wallet, driver’s license, debit card, and car keys.

After robbing the victim, identified as M.R. in the court documents, Bennett and Morris took off in his car, according to a news release.

Investigators say the second incident took place on November 16th, 2018 when Bennett and Morris approached another victim, identified as I.F. in court documents, in an apartment complex parking lot on Countryside Drive in Charlotte.

Bennett and Morris once again pointed a gun at their victim and robbed I.F. of the keys to her Toyota Prius and took off, according to a news release.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers say they caught the two the same day, with Bennet driving and Morris in the passenger seat of the stolen car.

Investigators say Bennett plead guilty on July, 25th 2019 to two counts of carjacking and for using a firearm during the two incidents.

Morris was previously sentenced to nine years for his role in the carjacking on November 16th, according to a news release.

Andrew Murray, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, say Bennett remains in federal custody.
