
CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A Casar man is in custody for abusing a mentally handicapped man. On Wednesday, Cleveland County Department of Social Services workers responded to a check the welfare call at a home on Dirty Ankle Road. When they arrived they say they found a disabled male who had injuries over most of his body. DSS employees immediately called emergency crews and the victim was transported to a local hospital.
After evaluating the victim, hospital officials told authorities the man had severe injuries including broken bones, fractures, and bruises all over his body.
Investigators say 50-year-old Charles Newton was the only person living in the residence and is a cousin and caregiver to the victim.
Newton was immediately taken into custody. He faces several charges including abuse of disabled/elderly inflicting serious injury, assault by strangulation and malicious castration. He is being held under a $150,000 bond.
