Oh, that horrible feeling that everybody has had at some point: thinking that the office just might be able to get along without you if you don’t go above and beyond. And it’s not just putting in some OT on the weekends, some people are giving up way more than that to stay in the boss’ good graces. So what about you?
According to a recent survey, nearly 30 percent of American workers say they’ve skipped some of their vacation time to show how dedicated they are to the job. Some of that is fear that the bosses might think they can get along without you. And about 40 percent say it’s not worth taking the time off because businesses are operating so lean, it just means they’ll have triple the workload when they get back. One way or the other, American workers left about $52 billion in time off benefits on the table last year.
That’s the least amount of time we’ve taken off in the past 40 years. Our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, skips almost all of his vacation time trying to impress the bosses, and look at where that got him. So what about you?
