Police Release Name Of Suspect And Officer Involved In Southwest Charlotte Officer-Involved Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives with the State Bureau of Investigation say they are investigating a southwest Charlotte shooting involving an officer.

CMPD officers say on December 6th they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at a convenience store on Steele Creek Road around 3:30 a.m where they encountered a robbery suspect who has been identified as Jermario Baldwin.

Police say Baldwin shot at officers and one officer, Officer Samantha Thompson, returned fire, as Baldwin fled from the scene in a vehicle and a police chase ensued.

Detectives say Baldwin led officers on a chase, until hitting an utility pole and stopping on South Tryon Street.

Officers say before taking Baldwin into custody, they noticed he had sustained a gunshot wound, so Medics took him to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.  CMPD says Baldwin is currently being treated for the injuries he sustained in the shooting and the car wreck but will be arrested and served with the following warrants once he has been released from the hospital: attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, 1st degree kidnapping, two counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and felony fleeing to elude in a motor vehicle.

No officers were injured in the shooting, according to a news release.

Detectives say the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate investigation to decide if CMPD policies and procedures were followed, as is standard procedure, and the officer involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is also standard procedure for whenever an officer discharges a weapon.

Police say the investigation remains active, and anyone with more information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak directly with a Homicide Unit detective or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
