The Americans edged Ghana, the team that eliminated the U.S. in each of the last two World Cups, 2-1. John Brooks scored the winning goal in the 86th minute of the contest. Team USA next plays Sunday against Portugal.

SAO PAULO (AP) β€” Forward Jozy Altidore (JOH’-zee AL’-tih-door) of the U.S. World Cup team will have his injured left hamstring examined today. He fell to the ground in pain, clutching the back of his left leg, in the first half of yesterday’s 2-1 win over Ghana.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) β€” The loser of today’s Texas Tech-Mississippi College World Series game will be eliminated from the event. Today’s second game is this evening with TCU playing Virginia. The loser of that game will face the winner of the Tech-Mississippi game.

SAN DIEGO (AP) β€” The baseball world is still mourning the loss of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. The 54-year old passed away yesterday after a bout with cancer. Gwynn, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007, won eight National League batting titles and was an All-Star 15 times.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) β€” The Baltimore Orioles are losing catcher Matt Wieters (WEE’-turz) for the rest of the season. He faces season-ending surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday. Wieters hit .309 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 26 games.
