New Agreement Allows More Vehicles To Travel In I-77 Express Lanes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Transit officials say as part of a pilot program between NCDOT and Interstate 77 Mobility Partners more vehicles such as delivery trucks, small business trucks, and work trailers can begin using the express lane on I-77 starting February 8th.

Officials say the agreement allows all medium-sized trucks (two-axle) or vehicles with a one-axle trailer to travel in the express lane, providing a quicker way for these vehicles to get around.

This modification to traffic and travel comes after a community and local advisory group formed by Governor Cooper worked with NCDOT officials to expand access to the express lanes at no cost to them or local governments, according to a news release.

Officials say currently no vehicles longer than 20 feet are allowed in the express lanes, and this program removes the length limit and replaces it by limiting vehicles depending on how many axles they have.

Vehicles longer than 22 feet will be subject to paying for multiple tolls in one to compensate for the additional space required by longer vehicles and to allow traffic flow to remain steady, officials say.
