South Africa’s Impey returns positive doping tests

SYDNEY (AP) — The Orica-GreenEDGE pro-cycling team says South African rider Daryl Impey has failed a doping test.

After earlier omitting Impey from its Tour de France lineup, the Australian team released a statement Wednesday saying the 29-year-old tested positive to the banned masking agent Probenecid.

Orica-GreenEDGE says it was notified by The South African Institute for a Drug-Free sport that Impey delivered a positive A and B sample for the substance after the South African Championships on February 6.

Impey became the first African rider to wear the Tour de France’s yellow jersey last year when he led the standings during stages six and seven.

Impey said in a statement he is “committed to drug-free sport and fully intend to take all steps necessary to clear myself of any suspicion.”
