CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sam Spencer, a member of The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission, is calling for the historic Penguin Drive-In sign to stay put after plans for its removal were announced on Wednesday.
Spencer says “In a city that has demolished too much of its history, that Penguin sign means a lot to those of us who are still walking Thomas and Commonwealth 20 and 30 years later.”
Spencer says he has supported a lot of change and economic growth in Charlotte since working as a member of the planning commission and as chair.
He says “Change is good. But there are special parts of our history that are worth preserving. The Penguin sign is one of those.”
Spencer says at his old office in Plaza Midwood, he walked past the sign every week as he went to either Midwood Smokehouse or YAFO with his crew.
He says Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find in the 90’s and the Penguin in the 00’s are what brought him to the Plaza Midwood neighborhood in the first place.
Spencer is calling for the sign to stay in its place and to be restored as an important part of Charlotte’s history.
Spencer says “I implore you to consider keeping the sign in situ and working with the city and our Historic Landmarks Commission to preserve it.”
