French authorities have ordered nearly 4,000 more people to evacuate from Atlantic coast tourist sites because of wildfires. The orders issued Tuesday are widening what may be France’s largest peacetime evacuation.
The threat of severe weather increases Tuesday evening with all modes of severe weather possible. Stay weather-wise and have at least two ways to get warnings.
A wildfire in southwest France grew so powerful that its towering smoke column became a thunderstorm, generating lightning that struck the ground and ignited new fires beyond the original blaze, French officials said.
At this point, confidence is highest for the heaviest rain to develop first across the foothills, the Interstate 40 corridor, and the northern Piedmont before shifting farther south and east. The Charlotte metro and communities along Interstate 85 are currently trending toward seeing the most active weather during the early to mid-morning hours. Gusty winds and frequent lightning will also be a play.
