American Pharoah heavy favorite for Arkansas Derby

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — American Pharoah has been made the 1-2 favorite in a field of eight 3-year-olds for Saturday’s $1 million Arkansas Derby, the final major prep race before the Kentucky Derby.

The colt trained by Bob Baffert drew the No. 6 post and will be ridden by Victor Espinoza. American Pharoah won the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park by 6 ¼ lengths last month despite losing a shoe on a sloppy track.

Last year’s 2-year-old champion is a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby on May. 2.

Far Right, winner of the Southwest Stakes, is the 9-2 second choice with Mike Smith aboard and drew the No. 7 post for the 1 1/8-mile race.

The field, from the rail out: The Truth Or Else (15-1), Mr. Z (10-1), Bridget’s Big Luvy (20-1), Madefromlucky (6-1), Bold Conquest (20-1), American Pharoah, Far Right and Win The Space (30-1).
