Mount Holly Community Prays for Pastor Killed in House Fire

MOUNT HOLLY, NC- A somber prayer service for a Mount Holly pastor Wednesday night. People at Goshen Free Will Baptist Church remembered Clayton Burch. He died following a fire that burned the parsonage on Tuesday.

“I know our hearts are grieving, but we grieve with hope,” said a visiting pastor speaking to a crowd of dozens of people.

It was the first time the community has come together since the loss of their pastor.

“When I found this out, it was just a heartbreaking situation,” said Steve Lingerfelt.

Lingerfelt sings at the church and knew pastor Burch well.

“He’s a man of god. He preached unbelievable. Loved everybody. Cared for everybody,” said Lingerfelt.

Burch’s home caught fire early Tuesday morning. The flames tore through the garage, burned a car and destroyed much of the house.

Burch was flown to the Wake Forest Burn Center with critical injuries. He died Wednesday. Doctors treated his wife Barbara. She was later released.

“It’s just really sad. It’s sad and to know he’s gone now,” said Renaye White. a church member.

The Pastor’s impact was felt by many. He was known for his brightly colored suits and Elvis impersonations.

“He’d preach it one way. He wouldn’t cut no corners on nothing buddy,” said Lingerfelt, “and that’s what I loved about him.”

Burch’s funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the church on West Catawba Ave. in Mount Holly.
