Statesville residents and business owners will face fines for violating water restrictions

STATESVILLE, N.C. – Statesville residents and business owners can now face fines for violating water restrictions. It’s a part of an effort to save at least 10-20% of water in the extreme drought conditions.

There are mandatory restrictions on using water outdoors. To help conserve water in the extreme drought, residents can only water their grass on certain days. Residential car washes, pressure washing, decorative fountains and filling pools are prohibited. People can use watering cans.

Statesville officials mailed a letter to residents explaining the drought restrictions. The city will charge $200 for the first violation, $400 for the second and $600 for any violations after that.

In a statement on the website the City Manager says β€œOur goal is not enforcement. Our goal is conservation. We’re asking everyone to do their part so we can protect this resource for the entire community.”

Charlotte Water starts mandatory restrictions May 15th.
