MIAMI (AP) β Anthony Bosch has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids, more than a year after the owner of a now-defunct Florida clinic was accused of providing performance-enhancing drugs to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and other players. Court documents say that Bosch willfully conspired to distribute the anabolic steroid testosterone from October 2008 through December 2012. Also arrested in connection to a drug conspiracy was Yuri Sucart (SOO’-kart), a cousin of Rodriguez.
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) β Tight end Martellus Bennett has been suspended indefinitely by the Chicago Bears after an altercation in practice Monday. Bennett was spun to the ground by rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller during a full-pad scrimmage in which players were not supposed to be taken to the ground. Bennett responded by getting up, grabbing the first-round draft pick and slamming him to the turf.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) β The San Antonio Spurs are the second NBA team to have a female coach, hiring WNBA star Becky Hammon as an assistant to Gregg Popovich. She will retire from the San Antonio Silver Stars after this season to join the Spurs. The first female NBA assistant was Lisa Boyer, who served on John Lucas’ staff in Cleveland in 2001-02.
UNDATED (AP) β The U.S. men’s national basketball team has trimmed its roster to 16 players by cutting Washington’s John Wall and Bradley Beal, and Atlanta’s Paul Millsap. The Americans are off this week after training last week in Las Vegas, where Indiana All-Star Paul George was lost to a broken right leg. They will resume practice for the World Cup of Basketball on Aug. 14 in Chicago.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) β Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been hospitalized in Finland because of blood clots in his lower right leg and in both lungs, making his return to the ice uncertain. The 39-year-old signed a one-year contract this summer for $2 million and has been Philadelphia’s top defenseman for several years, compiling a +38 for his career. The Flyers have braced for Timonen’s absence by signing defenseman Michael Del Zotto to a one-year contract.
