BOSTON (AP) β€” An elegant church in one of Boston’s most chic shopping districts is home to a program that helps the homeless express themselves though art.

Common Art was founded in 1996 when a homeless person told a local pastor that he wanted a place to be creative. Now, as many as 100 homeless and low-income people attend the weekly program at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on swank Newbury Street.

Amanda Grant-Rose is the executive director of the non-denominational ministry that oversees the program. She says the goal is to provide a safe, warm, welcoming community and teach self-worth.

Some participants even earn a little cash by selling their work.

Chris Haubrich started coming to Common Art 10 years ago.

He says he’s learned about responsibility and how to get along with others.
