CHARLOTTE, NC – City leaders appear ready to approve a $7 Million plan that would outfit all CMPD officers with body cameras.
“I think the council recognizes the need to create as much accountability and transparency as possible,” says Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Michael Barnes.
“So if there is any unfortunate incident, we’ll have a video record of that. And I think it will help people understand what happened, why it happened,” Barnes says.
The proposal Chief Rodney Monroe outlined two weeks ago, calls for training to start in March, with two divisions rolling out cameras each month. All officers within CMPD would be equipped by September.
Of course, the plan comes with a big price tag. The $7 Million price tag will be spread out over five years.
This cost includes buying the equipment, licenses, and maintenance.
