PANTHERS-PRACTICE SQUAD

Panthers sign 10 players to practice squad

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” The Carolina Panthers signed 10 players to their practice squad β€” all of whom were cut by the team on Saturday.

Signed to the practice squad on Sunday were wide receivers Tavarres King and Marcus Lucas, running back Darrin Reaves, offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, defensive tackles Micanor Regis and Casey Walker, linebackers D.J. Smith and Adarius Glanton, cornerback Carrington Byndom and safety Robert Lester.

North Carolina A&T cruises to 47-13 win

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) β€” Tarik Cohen and Kwashaun Quick each scored two touchdowns and North Carolina A&T defeated Alabama A&M 47-13 in the MEAC/SWAC challenge on Sunday.

Cohen had 161 yards rushing and Quick added 94 as the Aggies parlayed big scoring plays into a 38-6 halftime lead that gave the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference its eighth victory over the Southwest Athletic Conference in the 10-year history of the game.

Four of the Aggies’ five first-half touchdowns covered 26 yards or more.

After Alabama A&M closed to 7-6 with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter on Cesar Diaz Ramon’s second field goal, Tony McRae took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to start a run of 38 unanswered Aggie points.

Quick had a 59-yard touchdown run and Cohen an 80-yarder in North Carolina A&T’s 24-point second quarter.

Marquell Cartwright added a third-quarter touchdown run for North Carolina A&T.

Alabama A&M’s lone touchdown was Brandon Wells’ 5-yard pass to Jonathan Dorsey pass with 12:29 remaining.

WEBCOM TOUR FINALS

Bud Cauley wins Web.com Tour Finals opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) β€” Bud Cauley won the Hotel Fitness Championship on Sunday to regain his PGA Tour card, earning $180,000 in the Web.com Tour Finals opener.

Cauley closed with a 7-under 65 at Sycamore Hills for a one-stroke victory over Colt Knost. The 24-year-old former Alabama player birdied five of the first six holes and finished at 20-under 268.

Cauley was 143rd in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings, forcing him to play the Web.com Tour Finals for the second straight year. Nos. 126-200 in the FedEx Cup and Nos. 26-75 on the Web.com Tour’s regular-season money list are playing for 25 PGA Tour cards based on earnings in the four-event series.

Knost shot 68, missing a 10-foot birdie try on the final hole. He earned $108,000 to wrap up a tour card after finishing 34th on the Web.com Tour money list.

The top 25 on the Web.com money list earned PGA Tour cards last week. They are competing against each other for PGA Tour priority, with regular-season earnings counting in their totals.

NASCAR-ATLANTA

Kahne holds off Kenseth to win Atlanta shootout

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) β€” Kasey Kahne grabbed the lead on the restart following a caution with 23 laps remaining and held off Matt Kenseth in a two-lap shootout to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday night.

Kahne’s first win of the season earned him a spot in the Chase for the Sprint cup. Kenseth also qualified for the Chase on points.

Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards and Danica Patrick.

Meanwhile, Tony Stewart’s much-anticipated return to racing ended a little more than halfway through the race.

Stewart hit the wall for the second time after his right front tire blew out on Lap 172, ending his night with a 41st-place finish.

MARLINS-BRAVES

Wood whiffs 12 as Gattis, Braves nip Marlins 1-0

ATLANTA (AP) β€” Alex Wood struck out 12 in eight dominant innings and Evan Gattis homered to help the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Sunday.

The Marlins had gone 60 games without getting shut out, the longest active streak in the majors.

Atlanta, which has won four of five and 11 of 15, began the day 1Β½ games out of the second NL wild-card spot.

Craig Kimbrel earned his major league-high 41st save in 45 chances.

Kimbrel retired Donovan Solano on a groundout and Giancarlo Stanton on a popup before giving up a single to Casey McGehee. The All-Star closer struck out pinch-hitter Garrett Jones to end it.

Wood (10-10) matched his career high in strikeouts for the second time this month. The left-hander, who improved to 3-2 with a 1.86 ERA in his last seven starts, gave up five hits and walked none.
