Holiday Shopping Tempting Target for Thieves
CHARLOTTE, NC — Malls and big box stores are getting ready for the Black Friday rush. There are good deals to be had around every corner. But those shopping steals also present prime opportunities for criminals to play Scrooge. CMPD has some tips on how to stay holiday shopping safe.
“They know it’s Thanksgiving, it’s Black Friday,” says Officer John Frisk with CMPD’s Crime Prevention Unit. “They know people are going to be out here purchasing electronics, TV’s and everything else.”
The holiday season is a time when people can become careless and vulnerable to crime. More people are out at the malls and shopping centers, often rushing around buying gifts. The hustle and bustle gives thieves what they want, the opportunity to be invisible in the crowd.
Theft from vehicles and robbery can spike. It helps to plan ahead, to protect yourself.
“Like my pocketbook,” says University City resident Shari McIlwain. “I usually bring a little purse, or put my money up in my front pocket, things like that. That’s my precaution, especially if I’m out in a crowd.”
“I feel like I always try to watch my back, and just be alert to my surroundings and everything,” says SouthPark resident Sarah Griebel. “But I know they’re out there. So just be careful. Don’t leave a lot of stuff in my car.”
But, often, those gifts are dumped into the back seat of a car, presenting a tempting target for thieves.
“We tell everyone, be aware,” says Officer Frisk. “Don’t be putting all your belongings inside your car. You know make sure you put them in the trunk. Don’t leave anything out. They want to get in and get out as quick as possible. Breaking into your trunk is going to take some time.”
Many stores extend holiday hours late into the night, then, at closing time, parking lots can empty out quickly. Criminals know this. Officer Frisk says CMPD will increase patrols around malls and shopping centers during the holidays. But you need to stay alert to your surroundings.
“When you go shopping, try to bring somebody with you,” says Officer Frisk. “Go in pairs. Go with your family. Don’t go alone. When you’re parking out in the parking lots, you know, park in a well lit area. Make sure you look around. You know look around your car before you go get in there.”
