Heat & Humidity Heighten

Get ready for the hottest stretch we've seen in nearly a month.

Mother Nature is revving up those fryers this week – get ready for the hottest stretch we’ve seen in nearly a month. Highs approach the mid-90s in Charlotte this Tuesday afternoon, one day removed from cracking the 90° mark for the first time in eight days on Monday. You’ll start to feel the prototypical summer swampiness over the coming days, as well. As temperatures climb further on Wednesday and Thursday, heat index values will likely surge into the triple digits across the Piedmont and Foothills. Despite the increase in heat and humidity, rain chances remain near zero through Wednesday night.

Appreciable rain chances finally arrive by Thursday afternoon as a sluggish rainmaking system slides in from the north. While widespread significant rainfall is unlikely, it will likely be our best shot for showers and storms we’ve seen in 10 days. The hot, humid, and stormy pattern continues into the weekend, although temperatures should regress closer to average in the upper 80s around the Metro on Saturday and Sunday.

After a weeklong hiatus, the tropics are starting to stir again. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring an area east of the Caribbean for tropical development. A flare-up of tropical showers and storms has a 20% chance of becoming a named storm over the next seven days in this region. The next two names on the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season list are Francine and Gordon. Keep in mind that hurricane season peaks over the next month.
