Activists Plan Another “Day Without Immigrants” Rally Monday
CHARLOTTE, NC – Activists are calling for another “Day Without Immigrants” rally Monday.
Organizers say Charlotte city and county leaders have not done enough to show support for a community they say is under attack.
“There’s a feeling that we need to stand up and fight. And we have to stand up and hold our elected officials accountable,” says Stefania Arteaga, with Comunidad Colectiva.
Members of several groups will meet in Marshall Park at Noon – and will march to the Government Center.
Like in February, they will again ask immigrants to boycott work and school and close Latino-owned businesses.
“It definitely was very symbolic of the stress that our community has with the lack of response from both our City Council, our County Commissioners, our Mayor,” Arteaga says.
Organizer Oliver Merino says there’s frustration in the community about leaders who have told them their hands are tied when it comes to immigration law and policies.
“We think otherwise. We think that they can do many, many things to make sure that everyone feels protected in this community,” Merino says.
Two weeks ago he delivered a list of demands for City and County leaders at the Government Center.
“We have to keep the pressure if we want some change to happen here local,” he says.
Organizers say they’re not sure how many people will show up Monday, but they’re also trying to broaden their support.
They’ve invited members of the Muslim and LGBT communities to participate as well.
