Soggy & stormy weekend ahead

We'll have to watch out for a line of strong storms rolling through the Carolinas Sunday morning.

The final Friday of 2024 is here – and it looks like your rain gear will be celebrating with you this weekend. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico has already arrived in the Carolinas; paired with overcast skies and northeasterly winds, scattered showers will make it difficult for many locations to get out of the 30s and 40s this Friday afternoon. The winter wedge will linger into the weekend as more rain arrives from the west, which will be heavy at times. The eroding base of cold air will lead to some wild temperature discrepancies on Saturday, as areas north and west of the Metro remain stuck in the 40s while communities south and east top out near 70°.

A robust area of low pressure and a sharp cold front will sweep into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area by Sunday morning. We’ll want to stay weather-wise for a line of strong storms bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and a low-end tornado threat. Most neighborhoods in the western half of the Carolinas will see 1-3″ of rain through Sunday afternoon, with locally higher amounts reaching 4″. Mostly sunny skies return by Monday afternoon as highs remain in the 60s through the final stretch of the year. A few showers return to the forecast for New Year’s Eve Tuesday, but this disturbance will be considerably weaker than this weekend’s. The first day of 2025 is trending sunnier and slightly cooler with highs in the 40s and 50s across the board.
