A Former Prisoner Discusses The Effects Of Racism In The Criminal Justice System During Community Event
CHARLOTTE, NC — As hundreds of people in Charlotte continue to discuss the effects of racism within the community, Ramona Brant spoke during Monday’s ‘Hidden In Plain Sight’ conference.
Brant served 20 years of a life sentence for a non-violent drug offense before she was granted clemency by then President Obama in 2015. She says she wants to get rid of mandatory minimum prison sentences and bring back parole to ease the prison population and give people a way out.
The conference was hosted by ‘Race Matters For Juvenile Justice.’ Judges talked about the hidden effects of racism in the criminal justice system.
