Late Winter Blast Hits High Country Through Tuesday
WATAUGA COUNTY, NC — Tuesday, expect some roads to still be dangerous in the mountains and foothills.
Crews say they will still be working throughout the night and morning to clear snow and salt areas that refroze overnight.
The late winter blast made a winter wonderland in the mountains.
“This was a little bit of a surprise for us,” said Robin Greene.
Greene owns Farmers Ski Shop in Boone.
“It has brought a few people here!” said Greene.
We saw families playing and enjoying the snow Monday afternoon.
“We’re kind of used to. It’s not a big deal anymore, but it’s still fun to come and make a snowman,” said Luke Lunceford.
They’ve got the hazardous weather down to a science up there. Now, it’s clean up time.
Tuesday morning, crews with the North Carolina Department of Transportation will be clearing side roads in Ashe, Watauga and Avery Counties.
They will also salt spots that froze over in the night.
Down the highway in Statesville, we met Jason Waugh clearing parking lots around town.
“It’s not all that cold. It could be worse,” said Waugh.
He owns Landscaping and Design, LLC.
“We’re making money today instead of staying at home. So, I am happy. My workers are happy,” said Waugh.
Folks are moving slush off roads and lots, hoping for an easier Tuesday morning commute.
“This is our third or fourth storm of the season. So, I think it caught most of us by surprise,” said Director of Iredell County Emergency Services, Kent Greene.
He says crews cleared highways and main roads Monday. Secondary roads took a back seat so Tuesday could be slick there.
“They will get to those as they can, but it’s been a very busy morning for those guys with very limited resources,” said Greene.
Same scenario in Hickory and the foothills. The spots the storm hit hardest will be catching up through Tuesday.
Crews will working 12 hour shifts until all is clear.
