No property tax increase in proposed 2027 Mecklenburg County budget
MECKLENBURG CO., N.C. – No property tax increase for Mecklenburg County. The county manager is recommending a $2.6 billion budget that keeps the property tax rate at its current level. Mike Bryant presented his proposed budget to the Board of County Commissioners on Thursday. The budget would be a $46 million increase from last year, or a 1.8 percent jump.
The county manager says the county saw nearly half of the revenue growth compared to the past four years. The most expensive priority on the proposed budget is almost $34 million for education. That includes a $25 million increase in funds requested by the Board of Education.
Mecklenburg County Commissioner Mark Jerrell, a Democrat, says, “I do believe our board supports that budget. As you could tell by the questions today, a lot of it really centered around the lack of funding from the state. And so we believe that that they are making do with what they have.
County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the budget next Thursday. A final vote is scheduled for June 2nd.
