NEW YORK (AP) β Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) says the NFL wants to implement new personal conduct policies by the Super Bowl. Goodell made his first public statements in more than a week about the rash of NFL players involved in domestic violence. He did not announce any specific changes, but said he has not considered resigning.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β Authorities in Minnesota have filed a petition seeking a protective order for the son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. The petition asks a judge to block Peterson from using any corporal punishment or physical discipline on the 4-year-old boy. Peterson faces a child abuse charge in Texas for using a wooden switch to spank the boy in May.
CHICAGO (AP) β Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was well supported while becoming the majors’ first 20-game winner of the season. Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul pweeg) hit three-run homers and A.J. Ellis added a pair of two-run blasts as the Dodgers clobbered the Cubs 14-5 in Chicago. Kershaw improved to 20-3 despite allowing three runs and seven hits in just five innings.
LOUDON, N.H. (AP) β Brad Keselowski (kehs-LOW’-skee) will start from the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Keselowski turned a track-record lap of 140.598 mph following back-to-back victories at Richmond and Chicago. He swept the Cup and Nationwide races at New Hampshire in July.
VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) β Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux (juh-ROO’) will miss at least two weeks after sustaining a lower-body injury on the first day of training camp. Giroux left the ice only 15 minutes into the first session at camp. He was selected as a Hart Trophy finalist last season after matching a career high with 28 goals and finishing third in the NHL scoring race with 86 points.
