US-IRAN-PASTOR DETAINED

Franklin Graham: Iran’s detention of pastor shames Islam

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” The Rev. Franklin Graham is condemning Iran’s imprisonment of American Pastor Saeed Abedini and charges that it disgraces the religion of Islam.

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry have called for the release of the Iranian-born pastor, who was starting an orphanage in Iran when he was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison for undermining state security. He has been confirmed for two years.

At a rally attended by hundreds outside the White House, Franklin Graham charged that by continuing to imprison Abedini, Iran’s leaders are “proving to the world that Islam does not want justice and that Islam is not peaceful.”

Graham was joined at the rally by Abedini’s wife and children, who led the singing of a hymn their father taught them.

EBOLA-AMERICANS

3rd US Ebola patient released from hospital

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) β€” The third American medical missionary who contracted Ebola in Africa has been released from a Nebraska hospital.

An elated Dr. Rick Sacra (SAY’-krah) said at a news conference Thursday that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has cleared him of the Ebola virus. He left the isolation unit at the Nebraska Medical Center on Thursday morning.

Sacra thanked everyone who prayed for him and told the hospital staff, “God has used you to restore my life to me.”

The 51-year-old doctor from Massachusetts said he’ll likely return to Liberia someday to help. But Sacra said he’s still “extremely weak” and expects a long recovery ahead based on what his friend and fellow Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly told him.

Debbie Sacra spent most of the news conference watching her husband of 29 years. The two shared their first hug in roughly two months.

POLICE CHIEF-PRAYER VIGIL

Atheists challenge Ocala officials on prayer vigil

OCALA, Fla. (AP) β€” Atheists are complaining that a Florida town’s sponsoring of a prayer vigil after a spate of drive-by shootings violated separation of church and state.

The complaints from Frances Porgal, organizer of local atheist groups, came after the Ocala Police Department’s Facebook page posted a letter urging citizens to attend.

Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn told The Ocala Star-Banner that officials have a First Amendment right to gather and pray.

The Washington DC-based American Humanist Association’s legal director objected to the government’s endorsement of a religious event. But Ocala City Attorney Patrick Gilligan said the vigil was open to all and that officials have a right to speak at churches.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY LAWSUIT

Williamson County lawsuit cost approaches $90,000

GEORGETOWN, Texas (AP) β€”A Texas county’s legal bills are approaching $90,000 in a lawsuit filed after commissioners asked five constable candidates about their views on religion, gay marriage and abortion.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Williamson County attorneys maintain that the commissioners were within their rights to approach those topics because they were filling a position that is normally elected. The legal fees include attorney services as well as deposition and court reporter costs.

The Texas Civil Rights Project filed the lawsuit in June 2013 alleging the questions were inappropriate on behalf of a constable candidate. An attorney for the group criticized the county for spending money to defend the case rather than changing its hiring practices.

CHICAGO ARCHBISHOP

Archbishop designate says poor must be focus

LINCOLNSHRE, Ill. (AP) β€” Chicago’s archbishop-designate has told Roman Catholic leaders at a conference on helping poor church communities that Pope Francis is less concerned about ideas than helping the poor.

Spokane, Washington’s Bishop Blase Cupich (BLAYZ’ SOO’-pihch) told fellow bishops at the Catholic Extension Mission Bishops Conference that Pope Francis is “concerned that leaders and policy makers are stuck in the realm of pure ideas.” Cupich says if that’s true, it may mean those people are disconnected from realities.

Cupich said ideas are important, “but realities call us to action.”

Cupich’s appearance at the Illinois conference was planned prior to the recent announcement that he will succeed Cardinal Francis George as the next Archbishop of Chicago on November 18.

PRIEST-SEXUAL TOURISM

Pennsylvania priest held on sex tourism charges

PITTSBURGH (AP) β€” A Pennsylvania priest accused of traveling to Honduras to engage in sex with children while promoting missionary work with the poor has been arrested by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

The Rev. Joseph Maurizio Jr. was arrested Thursday and will remain in custody until a hearing Monday before a federal magistrate in Pittsburgh. The judge must decide then whether the priest will remain jailed until he can stand trial.

Altoona-Johnstown Bishop Mark Bartchak says Maurizio was placed on leave Sept. 16. That happened four days after ICE agents searched a private residence and the rectory at Our Lady Queen of Angels’ rectory in Central City, Somerset County, where Maurizio had been pastor.

Maurizio also faces a child porn charge.

VATICAN-DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Vatican details charges against ex-Dominican envoy

VATICAN CITY (AP) β€” The Vatican says its former ambassador to the Dominican Republic is accused of possessing child pornography as well as sexually abusing minors.

The Vatican on Thursday released details about the accusations against Josef Wesolowski (wes-LOW’-skee), who was placed under house arrest earlier this week when he was officially informed of the accusations against him.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the restrictive measures were taken because the Polish prelate represented a flight risk and because Vatican prosecutors feared he might tamper with evidence.

The Holy See recalled Wesolowski last year after the archbishop of Santo Domingo told Pope Francis about rumors that Wesolowski had sexually abused teenage boys.

Lombardi says an indictment and trial could take months.

VATICAN-PARAGUAY

Pope removes divisive bishop in Paraguay

VATICAN CITY (AP) β€” Pope Francis has removed a conservative bishop from a Paraguayan diocese after he clashed with his fellow bishops by opening his own seminary and promoting an Argentine priest accused of inappropriate sexual behavior.

The Vatican said Thursday that Francis took action for the good of the diocese and for the sake of the unity among bishops in Paraguay.

Bishop Rogelio Ricardo Livieres Plano, a member of the conservative Opus Dei movement, has defended the establishment of his seminary, which follows a more orthodox line than the main one in the capital Asuncion. But the Vatican investigated it amid reports of problems.

Livieres had also taken in and promoted a tradition-minded Argentine priest whose former superior had said was a “serious threat to young people.”

SISTER WIVES-POLYGAMY

Utah to appeal ruling in ‘Sister Wives’ case

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) β€” Utah’s attorney general has filed notice that he will appeal a ruling that struck down parts of the state’s anti-polygamy law in a lawsuit brought by the family on the TLC reality TV show “Sister Wives.”

Attorney General Sean Reyes filed the notice Wednesday, about a month after a federal judge issued a final ruling in the case. Reyes’ spokeswoman says Utah will file the appeal with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals within two weeks.

In December, U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups ruled in favor of reality show star Kody Brown and his four wives.

Waddoups ruled that a provision of the law forbidding cohabitation violated the Browns’ freedom of religion.

Brown family attorney Jonathan Turley says the family will take the legal fight to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.

SOUTH AFRICA-DALAI LAMA

Several Nobel peace laureates to skip meeting

JOHANNESBURG (AP) β€” Several Nobel Peace Prize winners will skip an annual meeting in Cape Town because the Dalai Lama has not received a visa to travel to South Africa.

The Nobel Women’s Initiative, founded by female Nobel laureates, said in a statement this week that China puts political pressure on countries in order to curb the Tibetan Buddhist leader’s travel and interaction with political leaders.

The Dalai Lama says he wants more autonomy for Chinese-controlled Tibet, while China says he is a separatist.

The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
