Chrome conquers Preakness…Rangers crush Habs…McMurray wins All-Star race

BALTIMORE (AP) — California Chrome is the 34th horse to win both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness after outrunning Ride on Curlin at Pimlico. California Chrome stayed near the front pack and began to pull ahead at the turn before maintaining thoroughbred racing’s hope for its first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. California Chrome has won six straight races and became the first California-bred horse to win the Preakness since Snow Chief in 1986.

MONTREAL (AP) — Martin St. Louis (mahr-TAN’ san loo-EE’) scored the first goal and the New York Rangers opened the Eastern Conference finals with a 7-2 win over the Canadiens in Montreal. St. Louis opened the scoring 4:35 into the game, one day before he and his teammates are scheduled to attend his mother’s funeral. Ryan McDonagh added a goal and three assists for the Rangers, who had scored just four times in their previous nine regular-season visits to the Bell Centre.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Jamie McMurray earned an upset victory in the million-dollar Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. McMurray was a 40-1 shot to win the race, but he was second on the restart for the 10-lap sprint to the checkered flag before passing Carl Edwards. Kevin Harvick finished second, Matt Kenseth was third and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST’-hy-zehn) birdied four of the last five holes for a 6-under 64 and a share of the third-round lead with Brendon Todd in the Byron Nelson Championship. Oosthuizen had the low round of the day after recovering from bogeys on two of the first four holes. Todd had a 68, making 12 consecutive pars before holing a 4-foot birdie at No. 18 to match Oosthuizen at 10-under 200.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Kenny Perry owns a one-stroke lead over John Inman through three rounds of the Regions Tradition, the first major of the Champions Tour season. Perry fired a 3-under 69 for a 7-under total, while Inman moved into contention with a 66. Second-round leader Mark Calcavecchia (kal-kah-VEK’-ee-uh) is among seven players who are three shots back.
