Animal Care And Enforcement Confirms 15th Case Of Rabies In Gaston County

GASTON, C.O — Animal Care and Enforcement has confirmed Gaston County’s 15th case of rabies after a dead skunk tested positive for the disease earlier this week.

Officials say Animal Care and Enforcement officers responded to a residence on Texas Trail off of Ike Lynch Road in Dallas on Sunday, regarding a family dog that had fought with and killed a possibly rabid skunk.

The skunk specimen was sent to to North Carolina Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh, where it tested positive for rabies on Wednesday, November 20th.

The adult female Husky that killed the skunk was vaccinated for rabies and received a rabies booster shot the next day.

Animal Care and Enforcement did a neighborhood canvass in the area of Texas Trail in Dallas to notify the community of the positive rabies results and to verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.

The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement says  having a valid rabies vaccination is important for your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of owners and the community.
