CHARLOTTE, NC — Maya Angelou died Wednesday morning at her Winston-Salem home. She survived the harshest of childhoods to become a world-renowned poet, activist, teacher and artist. Her son says his 86-year-old mother served as a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace.
Angelou’s former personal assistant, Charlotte resident Defoy Glenn, spoke with WCCB about her passing. He says she was always full of energy.
“She was so funny,” he said. “One of the funniest people I knew and so wise, so full of wisdom. And rarely did she overreact to anything. When you were in a tizzy, she was always, ‘Stop. Wait. Calm down. There’s another way to look at that.’ She kept me centered, and I adored her with every fiber of my being.”
