2 Charlotte Men Sentenced To Prison For Attempted Armed Robbery Of Local Restaurant

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Federal authorities say two Charlotte men were sentenced to prison on Friday for their involvement in an attempted armed robbery of a local restaurant where a victim was shot multiple times.

Deonte Curry, 27, and Trevon Ricks, 26, (both of Charlotte) were sentenced to prison for the attempted armed robbery of Mr. C’s Original Soul Food restaurant on North Tryon Street, according to a news release.

Authorities say Curry is set to serve 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release for his involvement, and Ricks is sentenced to five years in prison followed by two years of supervised release.

The incident occurred on March 5th, 2020 around 12 p.m. when Curry and Ricks attempted to rob Mr. C’s at gunpoint, according to a news release.

Authorities say Ricks and Curry entered the business through the back door, where they ordered an employee working in the kitchen to get on the ground.

When that employee complied, officials say the two men headed towards the front of the restaurant and Curry pointed a loaded 9 mm pistol (with an extended magazine) at the restaurant owner and demanded his wallet.

When the owner put his hands up, another individual tackled Curry in an attempt to stop the robbery, according to a news release.

As a struggle ensued between Curry and this individual identified as “M.C.” in court documents, officials say Curry fired his pistol several times hitting M.C. in the chest, stomach, left arm, and right hand.

Police say Ricks fled the scene while Curry and the restaurant owner continued to struggle.

CMPD officers arrived shortly after and arrested Curry at the scene and Ricks nearby.

In September of 2020, both Curry and Ricks plead guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act Robbery and attempted Hobbs Act Robbery and aiding and abetting, according to a news release.

Police say both Curry and Ricks are currently being held in federal custody.
