Arrieta sparkles again

UNDATED (AP) — Jake Arrieta came within four outs of tossing the third major league no-hitter in three weeks.

Arrieta held the Red Sox to one hit while striking out 10 over 7 2/3 innings as the Chicago Cubs earned a 2-0 win at Boston. Arrieta had a no-hitter until Stephen Drew hit a two-out single in the eighth.

The gem came six days after he carried a perfect game into the seventh inning against Cincinnati. Arrieta is 4-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings over his last five starts.

The Cubs managed just five hits but won it on a two-run single by Nate Schierholtz (SHEHR’-hohltz) in the fourth inning.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Detroit shocked Oakland 5-4 on Rajai (RAH’-zhay) Davis’ grand slam in the bottom of the ninth. John Doolittle blew a 4-1 lead in the ninth as the Athletics lost for only the third time in 12 games.

— Alcides (al-SEE’-dehs) Escobar hit a pair of two-run doubles and Salvador Perez added a solo homer in Kansas City’s 6-1 romp at Minnesota. Danny Duffy lowered his ERA to 2.60 by holding the Twins to a run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

— Robinson Cano (kah-NOH’) belted a three-run homer and James Jones went 4-for-5 in Seattle’s 10-4 pounding of Houston. Mike Zunino (zuh-NEE’-noh) added a two-run blast and three RBIs, while teammates Michael Saunders and Brad Miller also went deep to help Taijuan (TY’-wahn) Walker win his season debut.

— Steve Pearce hit a pair of two-run homers after Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy hit solo shots in Baltimore’s 7-1 pounding of Texas. Ubaldo Jimenez (oo-BAHL’-doh hih-MEHN’-ehz) held the Rangers to an unearned run and four hits in eight innings.

— The New York Yankees absorbed their third straight loss as Logan Forsythe singled home the tiebreaking run in the 12th inning to send Tampa Bay to a 4-3 triumph in the Bronx. Matt Joyce and Kevin Kiermaier hit solo homers for the Rays, who were two outs from a 3-2 win until Brian Roberts went deep in the bottom of the ninth.

— The Dodgers lead the NL West by a half-game over San Francisco after Dan Haren combined with two relievers on a one-hitter in a 1-0 shutout of Cleveland at Los Angeles. Haren worked seven innings and surrendered one walk and Michael Bourn’s single, both in the third inning.

— Cincinnati threw a one-hitter in San Diego, but the Padres still managed to beat the Reds 1-0 as winning pitcher Jesse Hahn scattered three hits and struck out nine in five innings. Tommy Medica provided the Padres’ lone hit and also scored the only run on Everth Cabrera’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

— Errors by center fielder Juan Ligares and third baseman Eric Campbell allowed the Braves to score three unearned runs in the eighth inning of a 5-3 win over the New York Mets in Atlanta. The Braves trailed 3-0 before picking up their fifth straight win and staying a half-game ahead of Washington in the NL East.

— Ian Desmond hit a tiebreaking, three-run double while the Nationals scored five times in the seventh inning of a 7-3 triumph against Colorado. Bryce Harper was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in his return to the Nats’ lineup.

— The Angels and White Sox were rained out in Chicago, forcing the two teams to play a twin bill on Tuesday.

MLB-NATIONALS

Harper rejoins Nats

UNDATED (AP) — Outfielder Bryce Harper was back in the Washington Nationals’ lineup Monday against Colorado after missing 57 games because of a torn ligament in his left thumb. His return created a host of changes to the Nats’ defense, with Ryan Zimmerman moving back to third base, Anthony Rendon (rehn-DOHN’) going to second and Danny Espinosa sitting on the bench.

Also in the majors:

— Mets manager Terry Collins says there is “zero” thought of placing David Wright on the disabled list even though the third baseman will remain in New York and miss the three-game series with the Braves. Wright had a follow-up examination of his bruised left rotator cuff in New York on Monday and will receive more treatment this week while resting his nonthrowing shoulder.

— Orioles third baseman Manny Machado (muh-CHAH’-doh) has begun serving his suspension after losing his appeal. Machado originally was suspended June 10 for intentionally throwing his bat on the field during an at-bat in Baltimore’s game against Oakland on June 8.

— The Kansas City Royals have signed 42-year-old outfielder Raul Ibanez (rah-OOL’ ih-BAHN’-yehz), nine days after he was released by the Los Angeles Angels. Ibanez hit just .157 in 57 games for the Angels, but 10 of his 26 hits were for extra bases.

— The New York Mets say former general manager Frank Cashen has died at a hospital in Easton, Maryland, at age 88. Cashen assembled the Mets team that won the 1986 World Series, trading for Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter, while overseeing the drafts of Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden and hiring manager Davey Johnson. He was the team’s GM between 1980 and 1991 after a successful run as the Orioles’ GM.

— The Houston Astros say they have been the victims of hackers who accessed their servers and published months of internal trade talks on the Internet. General manager Jeff Luhnow says the team will pursue and prosecute whoever conducted the hacking.

WORLD CUP

U.S. will have Altidore for Belgium

UNDATED (AP) — The U.S. is back in action at the World Cup this afternoon. The Americans will face Belgium in a second round match with the loser eliminated. The Americans got some good news yesterday as Jozy Altidore (JOH’-zee AL’-tih-dohr) will be available for the match. The forward strained his left hamstring in the Americans’ opener against Ghana on June 16 and didn’t appear in their next two games. The U.S. Soccer Federation tweeted that Altidore “is ready and available.” The extent of his availability was not clear.

Belgium will be without midfielder Steven Defour, who has been suspended for the match after being sent off in his team’s final group match with South Korea.

Germany has earned the right to face France in the quarterfinals at World Cup.

The Germans beat Algeria 2-1 after neither team scored through 90 minutes. Germany tallied late in injury time and again in the 120th minute to avoid having the game decided on penalty kicks.

The French scored in the 79th minute before benefiting from an own goal to complete a 2-0 triumph over Nigeria.

WIMBLEDON-DAY 8

Halep advances

LONDON (AP) — Play at Wimbledon is underway in London. In the first result of the day, French Open runner-up Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) breezed into the quarterfinals with a straight sets win over an unseeded player. The third-seeded Romanian needed just 57 minutes to wrap up the win. Halep, who has reached the quarterfinals at all three Grand Slams this year, is the only player among the top four seeds left in the draw.

Irving agrees with Cavs

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert tweeted this morning that the club has agreed to terms on a new five-year contract extension with guard Kyrie (ky-REE’) Irving. Neither side announced the terms of the deal, but several outlets reported that it was a maximum deal worth about $90 million that will keep him in Cleveland for the next six years.

The deal cannot officially be signed until July 10, per NBA rules. But it was a huge step forward for the Cavaliers and for Irving, and the first big splash of the new NBA fiscal year.

NBA-KIDD

Bucks work out deal for Kidd

NEW YORK (AP) — Jason Kidd is leaving the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nets and Bucks have agreed to a deal allowing Kidd to become Milwaukee’s coach. The Nets will receive a second-round draft pick in 2015 that was formerly their own, and another in 2019 belonging to either Milwaukee or Sacramento.

Kidd went 44-38 in his only season as Nets coach, but then sought control of the basketball operations department and was denied. The Nets gave him permission to talk to other teams about a job.

NHL-TRADE

Canadiens and Avs work out deal

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche have acquired veteran forward Daniel Briere (bree-EHR’) from the Montreal Canadiens for right wing P.A. Parenteau (PAR’-ehn-toh) and a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft. Briere had 13 goals and 12 assists in 69 games last season. He also had three goals as Montreal advanced to the Eastern Conference final. Parenteau missed 25 games last season after hurting both knees during the year. He finished with 14 goals and 19 assists.
