NEWTON, NC — Newton police were back at the scene of the crime today, five days after a friend found Maggie Daniels dead in her apartment.
Family, friends and former students are mourning the murdered counselor, while law enforcement is making the case its top priority.
“We went back out to the crime scene to make sure that we cover all our basis there,” says Newton Police Chief Donald Brown. “We’re also canvassing the area to talk to anyone who lives in the neighborhood.”
Newton police and the State Bureau of Investigation are turning over every stone, hoping to catch Maggie Daniels’ killer. Crime scene techs were back in the former Newton-Conover teacher’s apartment, while officers were talking to neighbors and apartment employees like Joe McCorkle, reconstructing the last hours of Maggie’s life.
“She pulled right there where that truck is at, and I said, ‘Hey Coach, hey Coach.’ I never did know her name. I didn’t,” says McCorkle.
Chief Donald Brown spent most of the day meeting with the SBI and the district attorney, trying to put the pieces together. He spoke exclusively to WCCB Charlotte Wednesday about the push to get this case to the finish line.
“We’re asking anybody that has any information, has seen anything that is maybe out of the norm for them or anything suspicious they maybe have seen over the weekend, if they would please just give us a call,” says Chief Brown. “Anything that may seem insignificant to them may be significant to us.”
Maggie Daniels’ funeral will be held Monday, July 7 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her family is also planning to attend a memorial service here in North Carolina. The date, time and location have not been announced.
