UNDATED (AP) β€” Baseball enters its four-day All-Star break with National League races much tighter than the three American League divisions. Washington and Atlanta are in a virtual tie for the East, Milwaukee leads St. Louis by a game in the Central and Los Angeles Dodgers are a game ahead of the Giants in the West. The closest race in the American League is in the West where the Oakland Athletics are leading the surging L.A. Angels by a game and a-half.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) β€” No question the team that goes into the All-Star break needing a rest is the Texas Rangers, who have the worst record in the majors at 38-57 after their eighth straight defeat, 10-7 to the L.A. Angels. The Angels, a major league-best 26-9 since June 6, swept a four-game series against Texas for the first time in their history.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)β€” The Home Run Derby kicks off tonight’s All-Star festivities with the midsummer classic Tuesday night at Target Field in Minneapolis. Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN’-ehs SEHS’-peh-dehs) is back trying to defend his title in the Home Run Derby.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) β€” Germany is celebrating its first World Cup triumph as a united country following its 1-0 victory over Argentina. West Germany won the World Cup in 1954, 1974 and 1990, with the 1990 title also coming against the Argentines.

EDMUND, Okla. (AP)β€” Colin Montgomerie is the fifth golfer to capture the U.S. Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship in the same year. The portly Scot won a three-hole playoff against Gene Sauers yesterday to win the U.S. Senior Open, the first time since 2002 that this event went to a playoff.
