HOYLAKE, England (AP) β€” Rory McIlroy won the claret jug for the first time with a 1-under 71 and 17-under 271 total to win the British Open in wire-to-wire style. Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler finished two shots behind. For Garcia, it was the fourth runner-up finish in a major without winning one.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) β€” Sonny Gray struck out eight to win his fifth consecutive decision, and the Oakland Athletics pounded the Baltimore Orioles 10-2. Gray is 11-3 as the Athletics improved the majors’ best record to 61-37 and remain a game and a-half ahead of the L.A. Angels in the AL West.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) β€” Grant Green hit a bases-loaded single off Fernando Rodney with two out in the ninth inning after Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) tied the score with an RBI double, and the L.A. Angels pulled out a 6-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners. That’s the Angels’ 30th come-from-behind victory, which leads the majors.

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The New York Yankees have opened their second half of the season by sweeping a three-game interleague series against Cincinnati. The Yankees wrapped things up with a 3-2 walkoff win as Jacoby Ellsbury scored the winning run on a pop-fly single.

SAN DIEGO (AP) β€” Odrisamer Despaigne (dehs-PAHN’-yay) came within four outs of the first no-hitter in San Diego’s 46-year major league history, but was not involved in the decision as the Padres beat the New York Mets 2-1 on Seth Smith’s run-scoring infield single in the ninth. Making his fifth major league start, Despaigne didn’t allow a hit until Daniel Murphy doubled with two outs in the eighth. San Diego is the only active major league franchise without a no-hitter.
