THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — William Zalatoris won the U.S. Junior Amateur on Saturday, beating Davis Riley 5 and 3 in the 36-hole final at The Club at Carlton Woods. The 17-year-old Zalatoris, from Plano, holed out from 119 yards for eagle on the 32nd hole — the par-4 14th on the Nicklaus Course — to take a 4-up lead and ended the match with a par win on the 33rd hole.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart says he isn’t concerned about his latest injury limiting his effectiveness this season. The six-year NFL veteran is expected to miss about two weeks of training camp after pulling his hamstring in workouts earlier this month. A former first-round draft pick, Stewart has missed 17 games the past two seasons with foot and ankle injuries.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ty Dillon pulled away from Kyle Busch down the stretch Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to win for the first time in the Nationwide Series. Dillon passed Busch off the final restart with 25 laps and held on for his first victory in 31 career starts in NASCAR’s second-tier series.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kevin Harvick has won the pole for the Brickyard 400 with a dominating qualifying run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Harvick was fastest in all three sessions of NASCAR’s knockout qualifying, and bested Sprint Cup Series points leader Jeff Gordon for the top starting spot in Sunday’s race. Harvick turned a lap at 188.470 mph in the final round of Saturday qualifying to put his Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet on the front row. Gordon was second at 187.770.
