Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.
ST PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) β The Tampa Bay Rays’ nine-game win streak is over. David Ortiz’s three-run home run, his 25th of the season, helped the Boston Red Sox end their five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Rays.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β Carlos Santana hit two more home runs, giving him six in six games, and the Cleveland Indians beat Kansas City 10-3. That ends the Royals’ winning streak at five.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) β It was Jeff Gordon Day at Indianapolis for a record fifth time. Gordon won his fifth victory at the Brickyard 400 exactly 20 years after he won his first Brickyard race. The win moved Gordon into a tie with Michael Schumacher (SHOO’-mah-kur), whose five Formula One victories at Indy had been the gold standard at the famed Brickyard.
PARIS (AP) β Vincenzo Nibali coasted to the Tour de France title Sunday to become the first Sicilian to win cycling’s greatest race since Marco Pantani in 1998. Marcel Kittel of Germany won Stage 21 in a sprint with overall winner Nibali finishing 24 seconds later.
