Arctic Air Settles Into Carolinas

Highs end up 5-10° below average over the next two afternoons before recovering into our holiday weekend.

We’re six days away from Christmas, but it looks like the North Pole is paying us an early visit this morning. Wind chills are approaching subzero territory in the mountains as we kick off the second day of the workweek, while the lower elevations are shivering through the teens and 20s. Northwesterly winds will settle later in the day, but highs will struggle to clear the 30s and lower 40s this afternoon. Not only will it be cold, but it will also be dry. Keep the chapstick handy as dew points remain in the teens and 20s over the next several days. Plentiful sunshine and a shift in winds from a more southerly direction will fuel a warm-up back into the 40s and 50s by the end of the week.

Rain chances remain near rock bottom over the next five days. More clouds build in by our holiday weekend as a rainmaking system approaches from the west. This incoming storm is trending slower, but a few showers on Christmas Day can’t be ruled out just yet. Highs will approach 60° in the Metro ahead of the incoming system; don’t count on seeing any snow on Santa’s big day.
