Colts clobber Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) β€” Andrew Luck had another 300-yard passing game to help the Indianapolis Colts win for the sixth time in their last seven games.

Luck threw three of his four touchdown passes in the third quarter of the Colts’ 40-24 rout of the New York Giants. He hit Coby Fleener for a 32-yard TD in the first half and added scoring throws of 31 yards to T.Y. Hilton, 40 yards to Reggie Wayne and 2 yards to Dwayne Allen in the third period.

Luck was 25 of 46 for 354 yards, while six different receivers caught at least three passes. The Colts are 6-3 following his franchise-record seventh consecutive 300-yard game.

Adam Vinatieri’s (vin-ah-TEHR’-eez) fourth field goal of the night put the Colts ahead 40-10 early in the fourth quarter.

The Giants have dropped three straight since a 3-2 start. Eli Manning was 27 of 52 for 359 yards, two touchdowns and one lost fumble. Odell Beckham had eight receptions for 156 yards and no TDs.

Philly loses Foles…Pack give McCarthy extension

PHILADELPHIA (AP) β€” Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles is out indefinitely with a broken clavicle suffered in Sunday’s win over Houston. Foles was replaced by Mark Sanchez after being injured on a sack by Whitney Mercilus in the first quarter of the 31-21 victory. Sanchez will make his first start in 23 months under the prime-time lights next Monday night against Carolina.

The Eagles also lost middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans for the rest of the season. A person familiar with the injury says Ryans tore his right Achilles tendon.

β€” Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy has signed an undisclosed contract extension. He led the Packers to a Super Bowl title after the 2010 season. His contract was last extended following that championship. Green Bay has also won four division titles and made six playoff appearances under McCarthy, who’s in his ninth season at the helm.

β€” A person familiar with the situation says Miami Dolphins reserve defensive back Michael Thomas has a chest injury that will likely require season-ending surgery.

β€” The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed cornerback Will Blackmon on injured reserve. Blackmon had surgery last week on a broken left index finger.

Rockets stay unbeaten

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Houston Rockets remain perfect this season after knocking off the still-winless 76ers in Philadelphia.

James Harden poured in 35 points and had nine rebounds as the 4-0 Rockets topped the Sixers 104-93. Harden hit 17 free throws for the Rockets, who had assists on 27 of 32 field goals.

Houston made 16 of 34 3-pointers, with Trevor Ariza (ah-REE’-zah) hitting six while scoring 24 points. Dwight Howard added 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Rockets dropped the 76ers to 0-4.

β€” Memphis has run its team-record season-opening winning streak to a four in a row after Marc Gasol (gah-SAHL’) scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Grizzlies’ 93-81 win over New Orleans. Zach Randolph had 15 points and 11 boards for the winners.

β€” Blake Griffin had a game-high 31 points and Chris Paul added a triple-double as the Los Angeles Clippers held off Utah 107-101. Paul finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

β€” Chandler Parsons dropped in 29 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 27 while each hit four 3-pointers in the Mavericks’ 118-113 win over Boston in Dallas. The Mavs led by 25 early in the second quarter before picking up their third consecutive victory.

β€” Brook Lopez scored 18 points in his season debut and Deron Williams added 17 and nine assists as Brooklyn ripped Oklahoma City 116-85. Lopez was playing for the first time since breaking his right foot last December.

β€” Darren Collison scored three of his 21 points on free throws in the final 16.2 seconds of Sacramento’s 110-105 victory at Denver. DeMarcus Cousins added 19 points and Reggie Evans grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Kings improve to 3-1, their best start in four seasons.

Blues top Rangers in shootout

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The St. Louis Blues have earned their fifth straight win while avenging their season-opening loss to the New York Rangers.

Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist before providing the deciding shootout tally in the Blues’ 4-3 triumph at Madison Square Garden. Tarasenko and Alex Steen beat Cam Talbot after Jay Bouwmeester (BOW’-mees-tur) scored the equalizer with 5:27 left in regulation.

Tarasenko has six goals in his last four games after opening the season with just one goal in seven games.

Martin St. Louis (mahr-TAN’ san loo-EE’) scored consecutive goals in the third period to put the Rangers ahead 3-2. Chris Kreider had a power-play goal in the Rangers’ second straight shootout loss.

NHL-OILERS

Edmonton defenseman suspended

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andrew Ference (FEHR’-ehns) has been suspended three games and will lose close to $119,000 in salary for his check to the head of Vancouver forward Zack Kassian. The NHL says Ference will be eligible to return for Sunday’s road game in New York against the Rangers. He has been suspended twice before and fined once during his 15-season career.

MLB-QUALIFYING OFFERS

Panda, Shields among those getting offers

UNDATED (AP) β€” San Francisco Giants World Series star Pablo Sandoval was among 12 free agents given $15.3 million qualifying offers by their former teams.

Detroit made the offers to pitcher Max Scherzer and first baseman-designated hitter Victor Martinez, and Pittsburgh did likewise with left-hander Francisco Liriano (leer-ee-AH’-noh) and catcher Russell Martin.

Also receiving offers were Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez, Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz, Royals reliever James Shields, Yankees closer Davis Robertson, Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Braves pitcher Ervin Santana and Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer (kuh-DY’-ur).

An offer could only be made to a free agent who was with the team for the entire season, and players have until Nov. 10 to accept. If the player declines the offer and is signed by another major league team before June 8, the old team would receive a compensatory draft pick at the end of the first round of next year’s amateur draft.

Meanwhile, pitcher A.J. Burnett has become a free agent after declining a $12.75 million player option to return to the Phillies next year.

β€” Paul Molitor (MAH’-lih-tur) has been hired as Twins manager and will be introduced at a news conference today. The 58-year-old got a three-year deal to replace Ron Gardenhire, who was fired five weeks ago. Molitor is a Hall of Fame hitter who takes over a team that has lost at least 92 games each of the last four years.

β€” The Chicago Cubs have introduced Joe Maddon as their fifth manager since the start of the 2010 season, giving him a five-year, $25 million contract to replace Rick Renteria (rehn-tuh-REE’-uh). The 60-year-old Maddon had a 754-705 record in nine seasons in Tampa Bay, leading the club to four playoff appearances, two AL East titles and a five-game loss to Philadelphia in the 2008 World Series. The Cubs had planned to bring back Renteria until Maddon opted out of his contract with the Rays last month.

β€” Aramis (ah-RAH’-mis) Ramirez is staying with the Brewers after accepting his half of the $14 million mutual option in his contract. Ramirez hit .285 with 15 homers and 66 RBIs in 133 games for Milwaukee last season.

β€” The Tampa Bay Rays have exercised a $2.5 million club option on reliever Joel Peralta for next season. Peralta was 3-4 with a 4.41 ERA in 2014, when he was second on the Rays staff with 69 appearances.

β€” Alan Trammell is returning to the Detroit Tigers as a special assistant to team president Dave Dombrowski.

Nation’s leading QB sidelined rest of season

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) β€” Washington State coach Mike Leach says quarterback Connor Halliday broke his ankle in Saturday’s loss to Southern California and is out for the rest of the season. The nation’s passing leader was injured in the first quarter of Saturday’s 44-17 loss to the Trojans.

Halliday finishes his career with 11,304 passing yards, the most in Washington State history and fourth-best ever in the Pac-12.

In other college football news:

β€” Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs has received a one-game suspension from the Big Ten for his part in an altercation before Saturday’s game at Penn State. Diggs and several Maryland players got into a scuffle with the Nittany Lions, and Diggs made contact with a referee who was trying to separate the players.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

AP names pre-season All-America team

UNDATED (AP) β€” Marcus Paige of North Carolina was the leading vote getter in The Associated Press pre-season All America men’s basketball team. He was named on 58 ballots from the 65-member national media panel.

Louisville’s Montrezl Harrell was the second leading vote getter with 56.

Rounding out the first five are Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor (juh-LIHL’ OH’-kuh-fohr), Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky and Wichita State’s Fred VanVlett.

Okafor is the third freshman in the past five seasons to be named to The AP preseason All-America team.

Authorities say Davis mostly to blame for accident

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) β€” Police say Indiana basketball player Devin Davis was mostly to blame for the car accident that sent him to a hospital with a head injury. Davis was injured early Saturday when teammate Emmitt Holt allegedly drove into him as Davis walked the parking lot at the football stadium. Holt told police that when he started to drive away, Davis “jumped” in front of the car.

Surgery for French Open champ

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) β€” Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’) has undergone successful surgery to remove his appendix and will remain in the hospital for up to two days to recover. Nadal first experienced symptoms related to his appendix four weeks ago during a tournament in Shanghai. He will miss next week’s ATP finals in London due to the surgery.
